Glossary of fashion terms used in reference to clothing from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Middle East, Malaysia and Indonesia as well Islamic clothing and related Ethnic wear.
Abaya - Floor length outer garment worn by women. Black is the Traditional color.
Abayeh - Eastern Mediterranean unisex loose cloak used as a cape or coat.
Abho - Embroidered cotton tunic worn by Muslim women in Kuch area of Northwestern Gujarat.
Achkan - A long knee length fitted coat with stand up collar, buttons to the waist, and flares at knee level worn by Indian men.
Applique or applied work - the art of embellishing a fabric or article of clothing with other pieces of fabric sewn on with concealed or decorative stitches or glued; also used to create designs with braid, ribbons and other trimmings.
Badla Work - Embroidery done using flattened silver wire.
Batik - Indonesian word for a cloth that traditionally uses resist-dyeing technique with wax used as a resist. It is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Senegal, Nigeria, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, and Egypt.
Baju - A blouse worn oer a sarong in Indonesia and Malaysia. Bhandani - Type of tie die popular from states of Rajastan and Gujarat in India.
Bindi - A dot or tear drop shaped decoration applied to the forehead.
Block prints - Printing a repeat pattern using a design carved from a block of wood.
Brocade - Rich decorative woven fabric.
Burqa - A black all covering outer garment worn by Muslim women. Buta / Buti - a motif design that is embroidered or block printed and repeated all over the fabric.
Chadar - A rectangular scarf measuring 1 x 2.75 meter used by men for multipurpose in the northern India.
Chador - An outer wrap measuring 1 x 3 meters or larger used by some Muslim women.
Chadri - A women' garment that covers her entire body with net screen covering the eyes also known as burqa.
Chikankari / Chikan Embroidery - A traditional form of delicate hand embroidery using white cotton, silk or rayon thread. This form of embroidery was patronized by the famed 'Awadhi Empire' as an icon of cultural refinement.
Choli - Short fitted blouse worn under the Saree.
Churidar - Close fitted pants with folds from mid-calf to ankles.
Chunni - Shawl worn with shalwar khameez or ghagra.
Chunri - Red bridal veil worn by the Mughal women.
Cord work Embroidery - Embroidery done using fine cord.
Crepe Silk - Woven silk fabric, lustrous and soft to touch. Has a smooth flow and drapes well.
Cut Work Embroidery - Embroidery where portions of the background fabric are cut out and discarded and edges have buttonhole finish.
Dhawani - Long material measuring about 2.5 meters also known as Half Sari. Thavani is worn with Pavadai.
Dhoti - Draped lower body garment worn by men, tied at waist.
Dupatta
- Long Shawl of 2 to 2.5 meters worn with salwar kameez, draped around
both shoulders and hanging down across the chest.
Djellabah or Djellaba - Hooded full length open robe worn by men and women in the Middle East.
Faux Silk - Looks and feels like silk, it is made of synthetic or polyester material.
Fez - A turkish round felt hat, or tarboosh usually red with a soft tassel on the center crown.
Gharara - consists of knee length Kurti, flared culotte like trousers and dupatta.
Ghaghara - Flared full length gathered drawstring skirt. Half Sari - long material measuring 2.5 meters that drapes around Pavadai over the back and cover the chest.
Jaal - Embroidery or Print all over the fabric.
Jutis - Traditional flat slip on embellished shoes turned up at front.
Kaftan / Caftan - Long loose garment with wide sleeves that reaches to the ankle worn by men and women in the Middle East and Africa.
Kain - A sarong worn by men as well women in Indonesia.
Kameez / Kamiz - Long loose tunic worn by women.
Kebaya - A fitted blouse of different cuts and lengths worn with a sarong or kain by women in Indonesia.
Keffiyeh - A checkered cloth used as a head cover by Arab men. The black and white weave is associated with Palestinians.
Kimono - Literally meaning "piece of clothing" is a traditional national dress of Japan. It is a layering of straight-cut, wide-sleeved open robe.
Kola or Kulla - A round embroidered or woven cap worn by men India and Asia. Kurta - Full sleeved loose long tunic with a rounded narrow collar or collar less with around neckline worn by men.
Kurta pyjama - Long tunic with loose pants.
Kurta Surwal - Nepalese term for Salwar Kameez.
Kurti - Feminine version of a Kurta.
Lungi - Men's garment similar to sarong.

Sari / Saree - Graceful garment worn by women In India and Pakistan. The Saree is a long material measuring about 5.5 meters, that is wrapped over an underskirt at the waist and draped over the shoulder.
Sarong - A rectangular piece of cloth or tubular cloth used as a wrap skirt of varying length and modes of drape used by men and women in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
Seedha Pallu - Draping the Sari with Pallu over the right shoulder.
Sherwani - Long close fitting coat worn over Salwar Kurta by men.
Sirwaal - Long elasticized underpants worn by men and women in the middle east.
Thobe or Thawb - Long shirt-dress like garment worn by men in Saudi Arabia.
Tunic - Loose fitting long top sleeved or sleeveless worn by men and women. Zhardosi - Intricate gold thread embroidery.
Zari - Fine Embroidery using gold or silver thread.
